Chapter 10

Mike

The trip back down Williams Street was uneventful, and although all five of the Jackpine members scanned every direction possible, the elusive person at the house near the casino didn’t reappear. Mike chalked it up to a survivor just staying vigilant and ready to defend their home if necessary.

As soon as Andy had steered the pickup off the main drag back onto 85, his face lit up and he called out to Mike and the others, “Smell those pines, guys. Just what I need to chase the stink of dead bodies and rot out of my nose!”

“You read my mind!” Mike said, while Erik, Donnie, and Jo sat there with their eyes closed, clearly enjoying the fresh air, too.

Twenty minutes later, Andy pulled up in front of the community shop back in the neighborhood, and was immediately besieged by helpers who were eager to see what the group had found.

Bob, Taylor, and Cory hadn’t yet returned from Whitewood and the teenagers were still out hunting, but everyone else quickly offloaded the trailer while they discussed who would go on the return trip to retrieve the Mustang and any other useful items from Jo’s garage. Mike still had a strange feeling about the return trip, but pushed it aside. They could use another vehicle, and he knew that such a hotrod would bring a lot of joy to the group. They’d made the trip there and back without a single issue and no sign of Al and his gang of degenerates. He told himself this nagging worry probably came from being cooped up in the neighborhood all winter; they were practically hermits now and getting a little soft.

“I’d sure like to get out of here for a bit and come along this time,” Angie commented, “and maybe go find that stash of homeschooling stuff for the girls.”

Mike’s stomach clenched uncontrollably at her request, and he couldn’t figure out why. He was well aware how capable his wife was and a jaunt to Deadwood for some school books would be a lot less dangerous than last fall when he’d taken her up Spearfish Mountain to fight the Russians. He reminded himself to stop fretting. He was turning into his late grandmother.

Jess voiced a wish to come along as well. “It sounds like things are quiet in town, plus it’s the middle of the day and there’s quite a few of us.” She moved over to stand next to Angie, before continuing. “I’m sure those scumbags wouldn’t try anything stupid, Mike. I’m desperate to get out of here for a while, and I’d like to look at that homeschooling stuff, too!”

“I’ll stay behind and help Maggie organize everything you brought back from Jo’s house,” Erik said, rubbing his stomach. “I’m not feeling the best after last night’s shots, but at least I can help out here and keep watch while you’re away.” After their scare the night before with Jo, they’d all sworn not to let their guard down again.
